City Description

Yanji, called Mini KOrea, is a city where communication in the KOrean language and Hangul is possible. Located in the eastern part of China’s Jilin Province, it is the capital of the Yanbian KOrean Autonomous Prefecture, where KOrean-Chinese, an ethnic minority, reside. Consumption by population proportion is considered to be the highest in China.

The area is 1,748.3 ㎢ and the population is 650,000. Yanji has many famous tourist sites that attract visitors. In particular, the Baekdu Mountain Tour is sought by many tourists, KOrean and Chinese, to feel a sense of national spirit.

Most tourists visiting Yanji travel in groups through travel agencies.
2. Main travel attractions
The main tourist attractions in Yanji are Baekdu Mountain, the North Korea border, Goguryeo, and the Bohai ruins. In China, Baekdu Mountain is called Changbaishan. It’s about a four hour bus ride from Yanji to Baekdu Mountain.
3. Tumen river bridge
The Tumen River Bridge is located at the border between China and North Korea. The bridge is about 514 m long. Half of the bridge is in China and the other half in North Korea. On clear days, if you look through the telescope on the observation platform, you can see North Korea in detail.
4. Daesung middle school
Daesung Middle School was a school in Longjing where Korean independence activists were active during the Japanese colonial period. It is well known as the school of poet Yoon Dong-ju (1917–1945).
5. Birthplace of poet Yoon Dong-ju
The birthplace of poet Yoon Dong-ju in Myeongdongchon, Longjing, was a traditional Korean south-facing tiled house constructed in 1900 by Yun-Ha Cho.

Day 1 Expand
  • Baekdu Mountain Scots Pine When you arrive at Erdaobaihezhen, the first village below Baekdu Mountain, there are many scots pines which have received the vital force of the mountain.
  • Reach the summit of Baekdu Mountain on a jeep To see the top of Baekdu Mountain, you must reach the summit in a Jeep. After a 20 minute Jeep ride, you will arrive at a location that’s about 30 m from Heaven Lake.
  • Baekdu Mountain Heaven Lake The elevation of the lake is 2,190 m above sea level and the area is 9.165 ㎢. The maximum depth is 384 m. In 1909, under the Gando agreement enacted between China and Japan, the Tumen River was declared as the national border. Currently, Baekdu Mountain is divided so that three-fifths of Heaven Lake, at the peak of the mountain, belong to North Korea, and two-fifths to China.
  • Changbai Waterfall The Changbai Waterfall is formed as water from Heaven Lake falls from a height of 67 m. The water from the waterfall flows to the Songhua River.
  • Baekdu Mountain Hot Springs Baekdu Mountain Hot Springs is also called Shinmul (God water). Baekdu Mountain is a living volcano and the hot spring is very hot. Most of the water is above 60 degrees, while the highest temperature is 82 degrees. You can boil eggs and corn in the hot springs as well. Most of the hot spring facilities are located at the hotel, by the entrance of Baekdu Mountain. Taking a break with a bath in the hot springs is also a romantic experience.

  • Daesung Middle School A school in Longjing, this is where Korean independence activists were active during the Japanese colonial period.
    It is well known as the school attended by poet Yun Dong-ju (1917–1945). Numerous independence activists and nationalists came from Daesung middle school, including Yun Dong-ju, as it was the cradle of nationalist education during the Japanese occupation.
  • Birthplace of Yoon Dong-ju Around 1900, Yun Dong-ju’s grandmother’s, Yoon Ha-yeon, built the tile-roofed house facing south. It has a traditional structure with a row of tiled floors and a detached house located in the west. The room Yun Dong-ju studied in during his childhood, and the room he wrote poetry in when he returned home during school breaks, are well preserved.
  • Tumen bridge The Tumen Bridge is a border bridge between China and North Korea.
    It is about 514 m long and half of the bridge lies in Chinese territory, while the other half is in North Korean territory. You can even see North Korean soldiers through a telescope at the observation desk.
