City Description

Nanjing, a city of historical importance
City Description

Nanjing, one of the four old capitals of China, is a city of history and culture combined with the charm of newly risen industry. Located in the fertile delta downstream of the Yangtze River, it has been the economic center of Jiangnan since ancient times. It was where Zhu Yuanzhang of the Chinese Ming Dynasty established his government. It was also the capital of ten other ancient Chinese dynasties. There’s a saying that ‘even if all Chinese people were to starve, Nanjing would never have to worry about food,’ a reflection of how it symbolizes a peaceful and opulent city. It was also the scene of the massacre of Nanjing, a tragic and unprecedented slaughter of approximately 300,000 people that lasted 40 days. In a small city of 6,600 ㎢, there are a number of sites and museums that are intertwined with history, modernity, peace and tragedy. It is a city that is developing rapidly while vividly conveying Chinese history.

Travel Tip

1. Language
The Chinese language is used and English is used at some hotels.
2. Climate
Called one of China’s three braziers along with Wuhan and Chongqing, it is one of the hottest areas in the nation. Winter begins in early December when the weather turns chilly. The temperature falls below zero once or twice a year, but otherwise it is not extremely cold. However, buildings other than hotels are not well insulated or heated, which makes them feel somewhat colder than actual temperatures.
Summer and fall are the best times to travel. The weather from mid-March to the beginning of May, and from October to November, is similar to spring/fall in Korea.
3. Time difference
The time is one hour behind Korea (GMT +8)
4. Currency
Only Chinese yuan is accepted and there are not many places where Korean credit cards can be used. Be sure to prepare enough cash.
5. Voltage
The voltage level used in China is 220V and most Korean electronic products can be used.
6. Clothes to prepare for each season
During the spring/fall, it is good to prepare clothes for Korea’s late spring and early summer.
For the summer, thin clothes are good as you are likely to sweat. For the winter, prepare clothes as you would in Korea.
7. Other
Currently, Google is blocked in China and you cannot use Google maps.
Thus, if you want to travel freely, it’s best to download Baidu maps on your smart phone before entering China, so you can find your way around easily when you arrive.
