City Description

The city of Changchun, which is the central city of Jilin province, is the transportation center of the three northeastern provinces and served as the capital when Japan built Manchuria. You can see Japanese architectural style reflected in buildings all over Changchun city.

In addition, since ethnic KOrean Chinese live in various parts of Jilin province, you can often see signboards and stationery written in Hangul while traveling around the city. You can get to know the Chinese people who speak KOrean and you can feel a greater sense of friendliness there than in other large cities. Changchun has a very high rate of urban greenery compared to other cities, so you can enjoy lush greenery in the summer, and it is a place that boasts beautiful snowflakes in the winter.

In the middle of October, the Changchun area greets the first snow of winter and does not enjoy the warmth of sunshine until May of the following year. There are various theories stating that the city was named Changchun because of its long winters and short springs.

In addition, Changchun is home to the standard Chinese dialect (standard Mandarin) and its price level is lower than that of major cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai, so many students who want to learn standard Chinese study at local universities and middle/high schools in the region.

Travel Tip

1. Climate
The temperature is chilly until April in Changchun and it doesn’t get warm as springtime in Korea until May. If you are under the shade of a tree, you will feel cool and refreshed because there is little humidity in summer. Autumn is short, so the first snow falls in October and the city enters a long winter period. Don’t forget to wear thermal underwear when visiting Changchun in the winter!
2. Language and currency
You will not be able to communicate in English, even at hotels, unless you’re at a five-star hotel. It’s a good idea to bring a basic Chinese conversation book when you visit. You can only use Chinese currency (RMB).
3. Near Gyerim-ro
The area around Guilin road in Changchun city is a favorite place for young people with a lot of Korean and Chinese shops. There are also Korean restaurants nearby, so it is a favorite place for Korea residents in Changchun.
