City Description

Nagoya, the commercial center of the Chubu region where cutting edge industries develop
City Description

Nagoya is the birthplace of the Tokugawa shogunate (military rule), which has built the foundation of modern Japan.

In addition, after Taisei-hokan (transfer of military power back to the Emperor) in 1863, the city transformed into a center of trade and manufacture and developed into the first industrial production region in Japan.

In Nagoya, you will see many aristocratic and antique gardens and buildings related to the Tokugawa family.

The locals may usually dress humbly, but magnificently and vibrantly celebrate special occasions like anniversaries and events. Will this perhaps be to remember the splendid glory of the past?

Why don’t you come to Nagoya and take a walk through the gardens and vacation houses where the Tokugawa Shogunate’s superpowers once walked in and take a dip in the hot springs and taste the food they once enjoyed?

Travel Tip

1. Characteristics of Nagoya Cuisine
The seasonings used there are thick and salty. Foods can be salty even if you request less salt when you place your order. You might want to ask for hot or cold water to dilute salty dishes accordingly.
2. Public Onsen
Prepare a small towel for public baths. The public baths, unlike those in ryokans and hotels, are not equipped with towels, so it would be economical to bring your own towel.
3. Characteristics of Nagoya
Nagoya is located in a basin, with hot and humid summers that often record the highest daytime temperature in Japan. Subsequently, though it is a metropolitan city, people do not stay outside in the summer. Rather, it becomes very crowded in the underground walkways and shopping malls which are highly developed.
