Almaty, a city where eastern and western cultures coexist
City Description

There are 130 ethnic groups in Almaty, including Kazakh, Russian, Ukrainian, Tatar, Uighur, and Goryeo. They have shared cultures together while preserving each of their own culture. The city has grown to become the first economic center of Kazakhstan with a population of 1.7 million.

Almaty is a European-style city with oriental trends. It is located on the foothills of the Tian Shan mountains famous for permanent snow, and boasts beautiful natural scenery.

In addition, you can feel the transformation of the city due to national economic development, and also feel free and comfortable. The southern part of the city is the new town center with business centers, shopping centers, and newly built apartments. The northern part of the city is the old town with traditional markets.

Travel Tip

1. Characteristics
It is a green city with a beautiful trees. It has a dry climate and during the summer, you can stay cool under the shades. From spring and autumn, beautiful flowers are planted all over the the city, giving the city a gorgeous floral feel, but old apartments give an ill appearance.
2. Currency
The currency of Kazakhstan is the tenge (KZT) and 1 tenge is equivalent to 6 Korean won. It is not possible to exchange KRW to KZT, so USD should be used to exchange to KZT. You can easily find a currency exchange kiosks throughout the city where the rate difference is negligible and that offer a better rate than commercial banks. A foreigner carrying quantities of cash going to a currency exchange may be susceptible to dangerous crime. It is advised to use the hotel or have a local person make the exchange.

Temperature during the day and night varies widely in the spring and autumn, so you should prepare a variety clothes for such temperatures. For those of you with sensitive skin, rhinitis, or easily chapped lips, we advise that you bring prescription medication to protect against the dry weather. Temperatures go up to 38 degrees in the summer but feels pleasant as there is almost no humidity. But due to strong UV rays, we advise that you wear sunglasses when going out during the day.
