City Description

Chongqing, an economic and cultural hub in southwest China
City Description

After the Nationalist regime of Chiang Kai-shek were pushed out during a Japanese military offensive, the capital cities of Nanjing and Wuhan were lost one after another during war time. As such, a temporary capital city was established in secluded Chongqing. After the reform and opening of China, the Chinese government focused on Chongqing. Chongqing was promoted as a directly controlled municipality in early 1997 and is now the nation’s fifth largest city after Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Guangzhou, as well as the economic and cultural center of southwest China. The city was named after the phrase shuāngchóng xǐqìng, which means “one happy event after another.” It is also referred to as a mountain fortress, due to its position on a hill with many slopes. In addition, Chongqing is home to the last provisional government building of the Republic of KOrea, which waged an anti-Japanese war along with the Chinese Kuomintang government.

Travel Tip

1. Location
Located in the southwest part of China, where the Yangtze and Gaengle Rivers meet, Chongqing is adjacent to Hubei Province in the east, Sichuan Province in the west, Shaanxi Province in the north, and Guizhou Province in the south. It is a city very similar to Seoul.
Chongqing is famous for its many hills. Even within the same building, people standing on one side of a room will be on the first floor, while those on the other side will be on the third or fourth floor.
2. Climate
Chongqing’s climate is humid subtropical. Due to this weather, it does not freeze in winter, and in summer, the city is the most humid in China. When traveling, it’s best to avoid the summer. It’s also good to have an umbrella and raincoat, as it is quite foggy and rain is frequent.
3. Specialty
Chongqing is famous in China for its delicious shabu-shabu, beautiful night views, and beautiful women.
