Shenyang is the largest city in the Dongbei region. In 1625, Nurhaci, Khan of the Later Jin dynasty, overthrew the Ming dynasty and established Shenyang as the capital. As the seat of government, the capital flourished before the Qing dynasty moved to Beijing in 1644. Even then, as China’s second capital, Shenyang played a central role in trade within Dongbei. At the end of the 19th century, it was targeted by Russia and Japan. The area was called Shengjing when the Qing dynasty came to power, Fengtian when China was unified and the capital moved to Manchuria, and was again renamed Shenyang in 1945.
In the beginning of the 20th century, it was the center of China’s railroad network, and thus many of its western buildings of the time still remain. From the Jin dynasty to the Qing dynasty, the remains of the Manchu era are well preserved. Shenyang is the city where you can feel the age of passion in the ruins of the Manchu period.
