City Description

Yantai, a modern port city
City Description

Yantai is a clean, beautiful and livable city with a good combination of mountains and sea. The port city is becoming more and more modern everyday, in the wave of reform and increasing openness in China.

According to ‘Shiji’ by Sima Qian, a master of Chinese literature, in the midst of the west sea were three spirit mountains named Penglai, Fangzhang and Yingzhou. These mountains featured a dwelling place for immortals, a pavilion made of gold, and herbs of everlasting life. Qin Shi Huang and the Hanmu-ji came to this place and tried to find the herbs.

Changdao is also host to a military base which opened to visits from non-Chinese in 2009. It is located on the demarcation line between the Yellow Sea and Balhae. It includes the “Changshan Islands,” which consist of 32 large and small islands. Together, they appear as if a line of splendid pearls were scattered over the West and Bohai Seas. According to the story, Qin Shi Huang looked north towards the sea from the summit, and discovered islands that were “disappearing and reappearing” in the midst of long and thin cloudy mists. A priest who was next to him called these “seonsan (on a ship)” and thus Changdao earned the nickname “haesang seonsang (island on a ship on the sea).” Sea coral and high tide animal communities create unique ecological landscapes. All in all, it is a good place to travel with your family to feel the authentic lifestyle of Chinese fishermen.

Travel Tip

1. Many Koreans in residence
In Yantai, there is a factory built with the investment of Korean capital by Korean large corporations and SMEs, as well as about 8,000 Koreans living in Yantai. This makes it easy to find Korean restaurants and signs in Korean, so if you have any questions or concerns during your trip, please visit the residence where many Koreans live and ask for help.
2. Markets
Sanzhan market is famous. It is a market formed at the center of three terminals – the express bus terminal, international port terminal, and train station. Here, cheap clothing, electronics, household goods, furniture, stationery, and toys are sold. Cotton silk products are especially famous there. Price bargaining is essential, and it is better to compare similar places and prices before you buy than buying things at the same place.
3. Food items
A 15-minute walk from Yantai Railway Station, there is a large wholesale fish market in Yantai Port. Local seafood sales begin around 5 a.m. and fresh, cheap seafood such as sea cucumbers, abalone, and crabs can be purchased. Bargaining is a must. Yantai has low rainfall and is famous for fruit (apples, cherries, pears, grapes, etc.) production, and it is fun to eat fruit produced every season.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1 Expand
  • Yantai Mountain A beacon was built there to watch for the enemy’s invasion, and over time, the trees grew and it became Yantai Mountain. After Yantai port opened, ten countries including Britain, France, the US, Japan, France, etc., established various facilities on Yantai Mountain and the east beaches. It gradually turned into a ‘residence area’ for foreign nationals. A few structures still remain today.
  • ChangYu Wine Culture Museum In addition to producing strong wine, the Museum of Wine Culture was also built to give tourists a clear understanding of the 100-year history of Chinese wine development. When you come here, besides sightseeing, you can enjoy the rich flavors of red, white, and health wines.
  • Moon Bay A small bay located to the east of the first beach, it is famous for a crescent moon statue called the “matchmaker statue” and is connected to land via wooden stepping stones.
  • Dongpaotai Dongpaotai was a place where artillery barrages were installed to stop the fleet of the Shandong peninsula navy. It is a good place for sightseeing and many tourists gather there every holiday season.
  • Yangma Island After Qin Shi Huang surveyed the soil and climate during the Northeast China patrol in 219 BC, it was called Yangma Island, as it was judged suitable to raise imperial horses. Today, there are horse riding grounds and a race track.
Day 2 Expand
  • Penglai Pavilion It is one of the four major scenic spots in China. There is a myth stating that this is where the Eight Immortals got drunk and crossed the ocean. You can walk around the castle and the waves along the sea.
  • Changdao County (South) Taking a taxi from Changdao port is convenient. You will need to negotiate the price.
  • Changdao County (South) - Mangbuseok Changdao Island is divided into north and south islands. The southern island is 7 km long and the North Island is 5 km long. Everywhere you go, there are shallow waters and clean beaches where you can enjoy free swimming.
  • Changdao County (South) - Imhae Park It is a very suitable place to view the Changdao archipelago, due to its high altitude. When you look out at the summit, you will see ships coming through in the midst of blue waves rolling in. It will feel like you are looking at a painting.
Day 3 Expand
  • Changdao County (North) - Weolahman It is one of the most popular beaches in Changdao. It is a bow-shaped sandy beach about 1 km long.
  • Changdao County (North) - Gujangae The cliff is almost at a 90 degree angle, with a height of 69.7 m, and is an eroded terrain where land and sea are joined. It seems the cliff was cut using a knife. The sight of the brick-like rocks stacked up is very beautiful.
