City Description

Tianjin, a European-style port city
City Description

Tianjin was so-named because ‘the son of Heaven came through the port there.’ It is one of the four major municipalities in China and the gateway city between Beijing and the sea. As the largest industrial city in China, it also boasts the nation’s first artificial harbor. Although it is more famous for its economy than sightseeing, and there are not as many attractions and ruins as other locations in China, Tianjin is a port city with a unique atmosphere where you can feel European exoticism, due to its long contact with foreign countries.

Due to rapid urbanization, Tianjin is mostly modernized but if you look around, you may feel like you’ve gone back to the old country. Take a walk through the streets to witness Chinese and western culture fused together.

Travel Tip

1. European atmosphere
In the middle of the 19th century and early 20th century, the Western powers built many buildings here in Tianjin, and the buildings are still well preserved, so it is one of the cities where you can feel European atmosphere in China.
2. Close to Beijing
Tianjin is very close to Beijing. It takes about 30 minutes to get there by express train from Beijing.
3. Climate
Due to the effects of industrialization, the weather in Tianjin is usually hazy, and it does not rain much, so it is very dry.
4. Language
The language used in Tianjin is not much different from the standard modern Chinese dialect.
