City Description

Sakhalinsk, where the history of KOreans still remains
City Description

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is a city that leaves a cozy impression, characterized by Russian traits rather than European vibes.

An interesting fact is that the blonde, fair-skinned, blue-eyed Russians coexist with minority groups including KOreans who were forcefully drafted during Japanese rule and their descendants who made this place their home. The KOrean culture planted by these KOreans shows our faint history.

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk has a population of 150,000, smaller than that of KOrea’s small-sized cities. The city is not crowded and tranquil, and if you go to the outskirts you can feel and experience the beauty of nature.

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is covered in snow for half a year. You can see snow-free scenery from May to October. If you want to enjoy winter sports, stop by to ski, skate, or ice fish. You can also go salmon fishing or seafood collecting in the summer.

Travel Tip

1. Climate in Sakhalin
Sakhalin is relatively cool and has low humidity in the summer, and winters are long and cold with occasional heavy snowfall accompanied by strong wind.
2. Using Electronic Appliances
Like Korea, the local electricity voltage used is 220V.
3. Sakhalin Language
People speak in Russian, and it is often impossible to communicate in English, so it may be useful to bring a conversational book or dictionary.
4. Sakhalin Currency Unit
The currency of Russia is ruble. Credit cards are accepted at hotels, restaurants, and department stores, but you should exchange some cash in advance in Korea.
