Rome is the capital of Italy and the center of politics and administration, as well as a tourist destination for travelers from all over the world. Rome was once the capital of the Roman Empire, and it is no overstatement to say that the entire city is a museum, with the history and culture of the Roman Empire so finely preserved. Each of the ruins holds a place in the Roman Empire’s history and is organically connected to each other. While it is nice to appreciate the old beauty of the ancient city, the joy would multiply if you know about the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, the historical figures, the early history of Catholicism, and the Renaissance before visiting.
Inside Rome is Vatican City, an independent country ruled by the pope. Vatican City is a small, independent country with a total area of 0.44 km². It houses the San Pietro Basilica, Castel Sant’Angelo, the Vatican Museums, and a number of tourist attractions where you can enjoy artwork.
Major attractions include hundreds of years worth of artworks collections by the Roman Catholic Church kept in the Vatican Museums, works of artists of the time, and the masterpieces of Michelangelo. The Pope’s office is inside the San Pietro Basilica, but it is difficult to actually meet him. However, he greets his guests every Sunday at 12 o’clock from the office window. If you want to get a glimpse of the Pope at least from a distance, go to the square in front of the cathedral!

Close- Colosseum It was used as an entertainment facility for citizens in the Roman Empire. It housed gladiator competitions, performances by beasts, etc. In 1980, the ‘Historic Center of Rome,’ which includes the Colosseum, was named a Unesco World Cultural Heritage Site.
- Palatine Hill This was the emperor’s palace and where aristocrats resided during the Roman Era. The palatial mansions still remain. You can view the house where Augustus and his wife Livia lived, and the Flavian Palace built by Emperor Domitianus.
- Roman Forum The Roman Forum was the political, religious, economic and commercial center of the ancient Roman Empire. Via Sacra is located in the center. It is the street where generals who returned victorious in the war marched triumphantly.
- La Bocca della Verità (The Mouth of Truth) A marble disc carved with the face of Triton, the god sea. According to legend, ‘if a liar inserts his or her hand, it will be eaten.’ It is located at the entrance of Basilica di Santa Maria in Cosmedin, and around the square is the Temple of Hercules and Temple of Portunus.
- Piazza Venezia Piazza Venezia was built in 1871 to commemorate the unification of Italy. Around the square you can see the Venetian Palace, which served as the Roman Embassy of the 16th century Venetian Republic. Currently, the Venetian Palace is being used as a Renaissance art museum.
- Trevi Fountain It has been said that if you toss a coin into this fountain with your back turned to it, you will return to Rome.
- Piazza di Spagna Piazza di Spagna is the filming location of the scene where Audrey Hepburn eats an ice cream. In front is the Via Condotti, a famous shopping district. Many visit this square as there are museums around Via del Corso.
- Piazza del Popolo It means ‘national square’ in Italian. In the center of the square is an obelisk which was brought by Emperor Augustus from Egypt. In the 18th to 19th century, this was used as a place for public executions.
